News: Dec 28, 2015

What are the consequences of specific pollutants at a societal level?

A research team led by docent Tore Söderqvist (Enveco) will initiate a pilot study in 2016 that will analyze the health and economic consequences of a number of specific pollutants. The Health Metrics unit participiates with health economics expertise in the research team (professor Mikael Svensson), and other partners in the team include professor Lars Barregård (Occupational and Environmental Medicine, University of Gothenburg) and Dr. Håkan Staaf (The Swedish Environmental Protection Agency).

The research team will analyze the effect chain that follows from a number of specific pollutants: (1) the level of exposure on humans, (2) the health and environmental effect of the exposure, (3) the economic valuation of the health and environmental effects.

The results from the study can form an important input into decision making and prioritization regarding infrastructure and environmental policy where the costs of environmental protection needs to be compared to the benefits of the reduced harm.
