Positive grant decision from Forte

News: Oct 06, 2017

Ulf Strömberg, guest professor at Health Metrics, receives research funding from Forte for his project aiming to develop and evaluate new statistical approaches in population-based cohort and screening studies.

There are increasing concerns about the validity of population-based studies within social science and public health research, due to low participation rates in certain population groups. Low participation rates are commonly observed in socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. The general trust in population-based research is at risk if the results do not reflect the diversity of the underlying population. Detailed population and health registers in the Nordic countries in combination with relevant statistical methodology provide excellent, but largely unused, opportunities to enhance validity in population-based research.

Ulf Strömberg receives 3,7 million kronor to develop and evaluate new statistical approaches to assess and adjust for selection effects and heterogeneity of exposure and intervention effects across population groups. The methods will be tailor-made for the Nordic context with extensive individual-level register data available, and we will review practical, ethical and legal obstacles of using such data for these purposes.

The project is expected to improve validity in results regarding risk factors for disease and effectiveness of preventive actions. The analyses will also contribute to better health economic evaluations of preventive programs and might promote new studies on strategies to improve participation in high-risk groups. Further applications of the methods will contribute to increased understanding of how and why exposure and intervention effects vary across population groups, thereby providing better opportunities for reducing health disparities.
