Abstract:
Healthcare system and database research in Japan

Sweden and Japan are both among the healthiest nations in the world. An important feature of the Japanese healthcare system is its social health insurance, which provides the 127 million citizens with universal health coverage at relatively low cost. The payment system also led to the evolution of claims-based administrative databases, which is increasingly being used for clinical epidemiology and health services researches. In this seminar, Dr. Yamana will provide a brief summary of the healthcare system in Japan. Also, examples of Japanese administrative databases and researches using them will be presented. Participants will be able to list the differences between Sweden and Japan and discuss possible research topics/designs using data sources available in the two countries.
